Congressman San Nicolas Advises CARES Act Funds be Used for Rent Assistance
In a letter to Governor Lou Leon Guerrero, Congressman San Nicolas forwarded a copy of a rental assistance program from Irvine, California, using CARES Act funds for rental assistance.
"With federal eviction moratoriums expiring, forbearance expiring, and the extra $600 in unemployment expiring at the end of July, Guam and the rest of the country are on the cusp of a housing crisis," opened Congressman San Nicolas.
The city of Irvine, California, using federal CARES Act funds allotted from the state of California, adopted a rental assistance program using those funds to support struggling households.
"While we are pressing for direct federal rental and mortgage assistance in the HEROES Act and H.R. 7301, both remain in the Senate as these housing deadlines approach," Congressman San Nicolas continued. "It would be prudent for the government of Guam to model the California and Irvine usage of federal CARES Act funds to provide direct assistance to renters as a bridge to direct federal relief," Congressman San Nicolas continued. "Doing so will prevent whole families from suffering a housing crisis on top of a health and employment crisis, and with these available examples action can be taken now before it's too late" Congressman San Nicolas concludes.
